We Are
Count Us 2! WAshington!

We're reaching out to ask for your help in changing this problem.

Local people have had these experiences.

  • A local set designer is unable to find small enough working gloves for his all-female crew

  • A woman is prescribed Tamsulosin to assist with kidney stones. Her breathing was affected and after she researched the drug, found that no women had been involved in any clinical trials.

  • A woman's doctor recommended over-the-counter medication to prevent macular degeneration.  The medication made the woman very ill. She found that pharmaceutical companies added an ingredient to the formularly that had not been used in the clinical trials. When she found a formulary without the extra ingredient, the medicine worked.

  • In 1990, a bill was introduced in WA state to require 3 toilets for women for every 1 toilet for men in all new construction for public buildings.

We're continuing to add stories about this type of discrimination. Please send us yours.

Throughout the country and the world, these things are also true

  • Women are 47% more likely to be seriously injured in car accidents.  Why? Because anatomically correct female crashtest dummies are just now being used in the US AND crash tests have not been conducted with women as drivers.

  • The unpaid labor provided largely by women has never been included in the GNP (gross national product) of any country, This work that helps the world run smoothly (child and elder care, school, hospital, library volunteers, bookkeeping in family businesses) has an estimated value almost equal to some countries GDP and yet, women's work is very under-valued. Why? Because originators of the GDP measure felt women's lives were too complicated to count and so excluded them all.

There's more...

  • 95% of female emergency care workers say their personal protective gear hampers their work.

  • Swedish towns save money and reduce injuries by plowing sidewalks first.

  • When women aren't asked, playfields revert to men and boys.

  • There is no law that requires women to be included in clinical tests when new medications are being created unless the company receives federal $$.

  • More and more, science is discovering that males and females differ down to a cellular level.

  • Financiallly, investment plans are not  designed to benefit women who may hold part-time and in-and-out of the workforce positions.

  • 'the bodies, symptoms and diseases that affect half the world's population are being dismissed, disbelieved and ignored. ' (p. 234)
